Week 50 – Duncan Mills to Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Day 344 – Duncan Mills

Sunday we spent the day at the campground. We were excited that there was a state park just across the road, but it turned out to only be accessible by permit. Instead, we enjoyed a nice day of relaxing, with some short walks to the river and around the campground.

Day 345 – Duncan Mills to Anchor Bay

Monday we started off working at campground, then packed up the van and headed back to Highway 1 to continue our drive up the coast. We found a nice spot for lunch along the way, and then made another stop for some groceries before heading to the next campground, which was tucked into a ravine and was only steps away from the beach.

Day 346 – Anchor Bay

We spent an excellent day at the campground, getting in a day of work while enjoying the sun and the sound of the ocean. We took a nice walk along the beach and we got to watch the Blazers get another win against the Pelicans on the laptop.

Day 347 – Anchor Bay to Fort Bragg

Wednesday morning started off with work and lunch at the campground. Then we got back on the road and enjoyed another beautiful drive along the coast to Fort Bragg. We checked into the hotel, then Tracey went grocery shopping while Michael finished up the work day. That evening we got to watch another Blazers game and enjoyed some Thai food from a place down the street.

Day 348 – Fort Bragg

We were lucky to be close to a nice stretch of the California Coastal Trail, so we began the morning with a run along the coast. Then after getting some work done and eating lunch, we took a walk through Fort Bragg’s downtown area and then down to the Glass Beach, where trash thrown by residents decades ago has turned into a beach full of smooth, rounded glass.

Day 349 – Fort Bragg

We had to take advantage of the great weather and excellent trail, so we went for another morning run before starting the work day. Later in the afternoon, we got back in the van and drove about 10 miles back south to spend a few hours in Mendocino. Then we headed back to the hotel, before walking down to the harbor area in Fort Bragg for dinner on the water.

Day 350 – Fort Bragg to Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Saturday we were excited to head into the heart of the Redwoods for the first time. We headed north on the last stretch of Highway 1 before joining back up with Highway 101, which will eventually take us almost the rest of the way home. Before reaching the campground, we exited the highway to take the scenic route through Humboldt Redwoods State Park on the Avenue of the Giants. We made a few stops to enjoy the tall trees, then arrived at the Burlington Campground, right in the middle of the park.
